Sempre que passo pelo aeroporto de Atlanta, mesmo que não esteja numa viagem internacional, vou até o
Bloco Internacional onde existe uma exposição permanente de objetos pessoais que pertenceram ao Dr. King. Ali fico admirando seus óculos, seus livros, sua Bíblia, algumas de suas roupas, o roupão ou beca que usava para pregar em sua Igreja, Ebenezer Baptist Church, ali mesmo em Atlanta. Enquanto observo estes objetos, documentos e fotos parece que ouço a voz deste grande profeta que não teve medo de levantar-se contra os poderesos daquela época em favor da justiça e igualdade entre os homens, valores estes que a Bíblia nos ensina! Pagou com sua própria vida o preço de ter um sonho sonhado em alta voz. Acredito que tenha sido um sonho sonhado primeiro pelo Criador. Tentaram calar sua voz com um tiro...felizmente não conseguiram. Ela tornou-se mais forte e hoje continuamos a sonhar este sonho! Um sonho que a cada dia que passa se torna mais e mais real!

Como ele mesmo disse em seu último discurso "Eu já posso ver a Terra Prometida, ainda falta um pouco para chegarmos lá e mesmo que eu não entre, eu sei que vcs irão chegar lá". É verdade, apesar de todas as conquistas e vitórias, ainda existe um caminho a ser percorrido. Continuaremos a caminhar e mesmo que eu não chegue lá, meus filhos chegaram, meus netos ou bisnetos haverão de chegar! Não importa quando tempo demore, apesar de desejar que cheguemos amanhã, não desistiremos de sonhar este sonho até que se torne realidade entre nós!
Este são alguns pontos de destaque do discurso proferido nas escadarias do Lincoln Memorial em Washington, DC pelo Dr. King, no dia 28 de Agosto de 1963, quando eu tinha apenas quinze dias de vida! Incrível como o poder destas palavras continua ecoando até hoje, mais de 45 anos depois! Que momento vivemos nós hoje na história da humanidade com a eleição de Barack Obama e sua posse no dia de amanhã! Isso sim é viver a história...como já diziam uns amigos isso é que é "fazer história"!!

"In a sense we've come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men - yes, black men as well as white men - would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note, insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked 'insufficient funds.'"
"It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment. This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual."
